  • Application of Medical Incinerators in the Safe Disposal of Regulated Medical Waste


  •          Incineration technology provides a safe and efficient method for the destruction of various types of regulated waste.     Medical waste originates from a wide range of sources, including hospitals, clinics, dental offices, field hospitals, research laboratories, crime scenes, and other healthcare facilities. Among these, regulated medical waste constitutes a significant portion.

    Regulated medical waste can generally be classified into four main categories:

    • Chemical waste: Waste contaminated with chemicals and classified as hazardous waste

    • Biological waste: Waste contaminated with toxins, animal tissues/blood, human tissues/blood, or biological agents

    • Radioactive waste: Waste contaminated solely with radioactive isotopes

    • Mixed waste: Waste contaminated with two or more types of pollutants, such as chemical, biological, and/or radioactive substances

    The types of waste suitable for incineration include, but are not limited to:

    • Medical PVC products, such as oxygen masks, tubing, IV bags, and anesthesia bags

    • Chemotherapy drugs, protective clothing, gloves, aprons, packaging materials, wipes, empty vials, ampoules, syringes, needles, and infusion devices

    • Laboratory tissues, cotton swabs, infectious waste, blood products, human tissues, contaminated personal protective equipment (PPE), gauze, bandages, and dressings

    • Hazardous pharmaceuticals, partially used medications, bulk hazardous drugs, tablets, injections, and antibiotics

    • Biomedical waste

    All institutions that generate medical waste must establish appropriate disposal procedures, clearly defining how such waste should be handled and whether specific items fall under the category of regulated medical waste. These procedures must be strictly followed to minimize risks to public health.

    Incineration is commonly used for the treatment of pathological waste and pharmaceutical waste. Residual pharmaceuticals in surface water, drinking water, and groundwater can cause serious harm to aquatic life and may also affect human health and development. Therefore, compared to disposal via sewage systems or landfills, incineration is a more preferable method.
